Ride to Hanmer Springs, relax in thermal springs
Your first day is mainly dedicated to your arrival on your flight to New Zealand. Our partner will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the hotel to check in.
On the second day, your time is your own, and you can acclimate yourself in peace and get used to the new timezone.
Curves and breathtaking views
On the third day of the motorcycling tour, you will start out from Christchurch on a short ride to Hanmer Springs, allowing you to familiarise yourself with the bike and New Zealand’s left-hand traffic. Hanmer Springs is a picturesque mountain retreat, surrounded by lush mountain terrain and atmospheric local houses, and is the perfect setting for getting in the holiday mood. The hot thermal springs, where you can relax and recover after the ride, are a particular highlight.
On day four, you will ride from Hanmer Springs to Punakaiki, which will take around 5-6 hours. The ride will first take you over the breathtaking Lewis Pass, which is extremely popular among bikers. You can enjoy your lunch during a break in the historic mining city of Reefton. Then, the route will continue along the wild western coast of New Zealand towards Punakaiki, where you can enjoy curves that are perfect for bikers and magnificent views. The impressive rock formations, known as the Pancake Rocks, will accompany you on your journey.
Tasmanian wilderness, snow-capped mountains
On the fifth day, the route will take you from Punakaiki to Franz Josef, which will also take around 5-6 hours. The route runs along the West Coast Road, and the time will fly on a visit to John Britten, a famous motorbike designer. The route takes you along the wild and rocky western coast with plenty of curves, taking you past beautiful local forests and lakes. Your day will be filled with impressive views of the Tasman Sea and snow-capped mountains. There is no other place in the world on this latitude where glaciers reach as close to the coast as they do here.
On the sixth day of the motorcycling tour, you will ride from Franz Josef to Queenstown, along the windy Tasmanian coast that awaits you with breathtaking views. Crossing the famous Haast Pass to head inland will be a particularly exciting stretch of the journey, offering incredible views of the rivers and waterfalls. The landscape will change as you reach Otago and the Mount Aspiring National Park, where impressive lakes and snow-capped mountains serve as the perfect backdrop. The highlight of the day will be crossing one of the most beautiful passes in New Zealand, before reaching Queenstown, the adrenaline capital of the world.
Spectacular landscape along Milford Sound
On the seventh and eighth days, you will take a break from riding and have the opportunity to explore the beautiful town of Queenstown. There is a wide range of activities to choose from – from paragliding to bungee jumping, right up to jet-skiing and rafting. We recommend a trip to the old town of Arrowtown, or a picturesque journey along the fairytale road to Glenorchy, close to Lake Wakatipu. In the evening, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Skyline restaurant, which sits on a mountain summit and offers spectacular views of Queenstown and the sunset.
On the eighth day, you also have the opportunity to go on a picturesque motorcycling tour, as recommended by our partner.
Curve-packed roads from Te Anau to Dunedin
On the ninth day of your motorcycling tour, you will leave Queenstown and head towards the village of Te Anau in Fiordland, an untouched conservation area that is off the beaten track and has very few equivalents worldwide. On this section of around 200 km, which will take you about 4-6 hours, you will be accompanied by waterfalls that flow into lush, untouched valleys from heights of hundreds of metres, while the shimmering reflections of the majestic mountains can be seen in the surrounding fjords. This area is home to dolphins, seals, and of course, penguins. The mountains and valleys here are so secluded that they give the word “tranquillity” an entirely new meaning. A boat trip to the famous caves of Te Anau is another attraction you can enjoy.
On the tenth day of your motorcycling tour, you can look forward to riding on a spectacular route alongside Lake Te Anau, followed by a ride through the famous Homer Tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel, you will enter a stunning mountain landscape with curve-packed roads. The indigenous Kea Alpine parrots will accompany you on your motorbike. The highlight of the day will be a 2-hour-long cruise on Milford Sound, where you can enjoy the breathtaking landscape from a different perspective.
Over the Mangatua Mountains and the Lindis Pass
The part of the tour between Te Anau and Dunedin has plenty of curve-packed sections on day eleven, which are a true delight for bikers. The road takes you alongside rivers and seas, through captivating landscapes, and offers countless viewpoints. One highlight is the aviation museum, which you will reach before arriving in Dunedin. Here, you can see Scottish-inspired buildings and a unique atmosphere. The Otago Peninsula is known for its Victorian architecture and magnificent landscape. After an eventful day, you will spend the night at Larnach Lodge, one of the most well-known places to stay in New Zealand.
On the twelfth day of your motorcycling tour, you will be spoilt for choice. You can either explore the region by motorbike, or take a boat trip around the Otago Peninsula. There, you can enjoy the unique experience of observing the majestic albatrosses and yellow penguins in their natural habitat. However, if you’d like to enjoy a more relaxing activity, a train ride through Taieri Gorge would be just as captivating. Here, you have the opportunity to marvel at some of the most spectacular sights the region has to offer, and experience the landscape from a new perspective.
Farewell events with unique experiences
On the 13th day of your motorcycling trip, your route will take you from Dunedin via a breathtaking section of the tour, through the Mangatua Mountains. The region has a dry landscape that is typical of the Maniototo area, and is accompanied by gentle hills. Then, your journey will continue along the beautiful, curve-packed Lindis Pass, which is surrounded by an Alpine landscape. You will be flanked by the Lindis Valley on one side, and the Ahuriri River on the other, before you eventually reach Lake Tekapo.
On the penultimate day of your motorcycling tour through New Zealand, you will ride from Tekapo to Christchurch. On this section of the tour, you will be accompanied by a breathtaking landscape that won’t soon be forgotten. The views of the highest peak in New Zealand, Monte Cook, is particularly impressive, and is the backdrop to many of the most famous photos of New Zealand. However, it’s not only the landscape that will get your heart racing; riding along the famous Burkes Pass, which is particularly popular among the locals, will also give you a thrill. After you’ve seen Mont Hutt, you will then ride through the plains of Canterbury and eventually reach your destination, Christchurch.
On the last day of your unforgettable motorcycling trip through New Zealand, it will be time to say farewell. After enjoying your last delicious breakfast and returning your motorcycle, you will be taken to the airport to board your flight home. The transfer to the airport will be booked for approximately three hours prior to your departure to ensure that you have plenty of time to check in and go through the security checkpoints. Although it will be difficult to leave the impressive landscapes and unique experiences of New Zealand behind, you will always be able to look back on this trip with fond memories. Perhaps you will already be planning your next motorcycle adventure!
Our motorcycling tour of New Zealand offers the perfect combination of an exciting riding experience and breathtaking landscapes.
